Spijkers en Spijkers is a study in duality.
Two sisters. Two disciplines. One signature.
Since 2001, Truus and Riet Spijkers have explored the relationship between body and line, between colour and construction. Their work exists at the intersection of fashion and fine art. It is rooted in the visual language of the 1920s and in the modernist principles of De Stijl — where reduction leads to strength and geometry becomes expression.
In their designs, the female silhouette is not decorated, but articulated. Clear lines structure the body; planes of colour create rhythm and tension. The influence of Mondriaan and Rietveld is perceptible, yet never literal — present rather as an underlying grammar.
Underlying many of their compositions is a quiet mathematical harmony. Proportions often follow the logic of the golden ratio — the timeless balance found in nature, architecture, and classical art. Like the Fibonacci sequence unfolding in measured progression, panels, seams and colour blocks grow from one another in deliberate relation. The body becomes the canvas on which these proportions unfold, creating garments that feel instinctively balanced, as if their structure were discovered rather than imposed.
The dynamic between the sisters forms the foundation of the label. Truus thinks in colour, like a painter searching for composition. Riet thinks in volume, like a sculptor defining space. Their collaboration results in garments that take a position — both mentally and physically.
On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, Spijkers en Spijkers aligns with State of Fashion — a platform that approaches fashion as cultural discourse. Within this dialogue between fashion, art, and society, the twins’ oeuvre finds a natural context.
