Autumn Winter 2012

Birds of Paradise…

Spijkers en Spijkers are launching into Autumn Winter 2012 with a strong and warm colour pallet for the cooler season. Insprired by Birds of Paradise. The reference that the Dutch give to eccentric and colourfull people. Edie Bouvier Beale a true “Bird of  Paradise” was the muse for this collection.

Born in 1917, straight into the echelons of American high society, to privileged parents Phelan Beale, a respected lawyer, and Edie Ewing Bouvier Beale a gorgeous socialite from the aristocratic Bouvier clan. Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter ‘Little Edie’ were the aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis.

The mother and daughter were extremely close, and were a staple of the New York social scene. Wherever they went, they were highly respected for their social graces, fashionable good taste, and pure fabulous-ness.

Life must have made an enormous u-turn on them when Phelan Beale left his family leaving them penniless. “Little Eddie” and her mother had never worked a day before, but remained living in the mansion, which fell apart as their social life. Not being able to fend for themselves made them in to a very eccentric and unusual couple with an unique style.

Fabrics for this eclectic line-up include silk dupion, silk satin samudra, silk-wool blends, crepe de chine, printed silk-wool maple, striped wool jersey-crepe and wool with lack finish. Ostrich and bird feather trimmings are apparent through the collection as a reminder of the eccentric influences and exotic birds. Ceylon yellow, bordeaux, lime green, mulberry purple and burnt orange make-up this sharply tailored womens wear collection whilst flashes of black and night shadow blue bring the collection back to a crisper climate.
