The collection Autumn-Winter 16/17
MOON TAN reveals a striking interplay of colors and materials, boldly combined yet impeccably balanced. The signature clear graphic lines of Spijkers en Spijkers are once again unmistakable this season. The twin sisters created exclusive fabrics featuring ikat patterns inspired by Asian landscapes bathed in the glow of a full moon. These poetic, figurative prints are contrasted with bold graphic cheetah motifs arranged in block patterns. The expressive prints are paired with oversized checks and shimmering lurex wool jacquards woven with delicate floral motifs.
Dresses crafted from super-soft crepe de chine, wool, and satin offer both elegance and comfort. They are styled with generously proportioned double-breasted mohair coats finished with faux fur collars and scarves. For eveningwear, the collection introduces vibrant dresses inspired by the traditional Shanghai dress, executed in fluid crêpes and metallic silks. Their graphic linear patterns echo the modernist aesthetic of the De Stijl movement.
The collection also embraces everyday essentials, including jeans and sweatshirts featuring enlarged placements of the striking cheetah artwork.Accessories include mirrored brooches, pendants, and earrings that reflect light like the moon itself. For the first time, Spijkers en Spijkers also present a line of designer bags, complementing the MOON TAN collection with elegance and sophistication.
For MOON TAN, Truus and Riet found inspiration in iconic 1920s advertising posters depicting elegant Asian women. “The pale skin of these models appears illuminated by the light of a full moon — yet this is merely an illusion. The moon emits no light of its own; it reflects the sun like a mirror. A full moon is simply a phase, never revealing its true face.”
Strong women have always been a profound source of inspiration for Spijkers en Spijkers. The muse behind MOON TAN is Ching Shih — pirate, princess of the Chinese Sea, and commander of the formidable Red Flag Fleet in the 18th century. She led an extraordinary life, embodied formidable feminine power, and ultimately died peacefully at an advanced age, wealthy and respected.
